Woody Harrelson OK to DNA test if he’s Matthew McConaughey’s brother
They could be legitimizing the “bro” in “bromance.”
Woody Harrelson responded to speculation he and Matthew McConaughey may share a father — saying he’d be happy to undergo a DNA test to confirm.
When Harrelson appeared Tuesday on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” the 61-year-old actor revealed he wants to know for certain if their brotherly bond is blood.
McConaughey, 53, disclosed he and Harrelson could share more than just screen time on Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast last week.
The “How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days” star told of a possible romance his mom, Mary Kathlene McCabe, had with Harrelson’s dad, Charles, during the time his parents were divorcing. (McConaughey’s parents divorced twice and married three times.)
Harrelson admitted the story is “crazy” as he shared how it all unfolded.
“Well, I’ll just say there is some veracity to that thought because we talked to Ma’ Mac, Matthew’s legitimate mother, and she let us know one time … I mean, this is crazy,” Harrelson told Colbert.
The “White House Plumbers” actor recalled being in Greece watching a World Cup match when the topic of “regrets” arose.
Harrelson said he mentioned that he found it odd that his father, who died in 2007, has “no regrets.”
He said McConaughey’s mom shocked him with her reply.
“And I have known Ma’ Mac a long time, and she goes, ‘I knew … your father,’” he shared. “And it was the ellipses I found a little troubling, or interesting. “I knew your father.”’
Harrelson added her pause was “filled with innuendo.”
Although Harrelson is more than happy to do the DNA test, he understands his “True Detective” co-star’s hesitancy.
“For him, it’s a much more big deal. I mean, he feels like he’s losing a father,” he explained. “But I’m like, ‘No, you’re gaining a different father and a brother.’”
McConaughey admitted on Ripa’s podcast he isn’t ready to put his paternal bloodline to the test.
“It’s a little easier for Wood to say, ‘Come on, let’s do it,’ because what’s the skin in it for him?” the father of three jokingly pointed out.
“It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take the chance to go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re telling me my dad may not be my dad of 53 years’ and believe in it?” he continued. “I got a little more skin in the game.”
McConaughey’s father, James, died in 1992.
McConaughey and Harrelson starred together in “EDtv” in 1999 and in Season 1 of “True Detective” in 2014.
