World Athletics Championships: Keely Hodgkinson claims 800m silver, Great Britain’s men and women both win 4x400m bronze

Keely Hodgkinson claimed 800m silver on the final night of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, while Great Britain won bronze in both the men’s and women’s 4x400m relays.

Hodgkinson started one of the pre-race favourites alongside the USA’s Athing Mu, and Kenya’s Mary Moraa.

The trio were leading the way from the off with little obvious challenge coming from the chasing pack, though Britain’s Jemma Reekie lurked in fourth hoping to take advantage of any opportunity.

With 200 metres to go, it looked like it was between Mu and Moraa to decide the gold medal, and it was Moraa who struck out for the line.

However Hodgkinson powered forward to take down Mu and claim an excellent silver, with Reekie in fifth at the end of the race.

Hodgkinson attempted to time a final late dash with 100m remaining but she could not whittle down the gap sufficiently.

Moraa adds the World Championships gold to her win at last year’s Commonwealth Games, where Hodgkinson had also come in second.

For Hodgkinson it was a case of deja vu having failed to beat Mu at the Tokyo Games two years ago.

The men’s relay quartet of Alex Haydock-Wilson, Charlie Dobson, Lewis Davey and Rio Mitcham impressed, particularly as Mitcham held off a challenge from Jamaica’s 400m world champion Antonio Watson in the home straight to make sure his team won a medal.
