World Athletics Championships live – Hudson-Smith breaks European record in 400m semi-final
2125 – THOMAS’ TAKE – ON DISCUS SENSATION LAULAUGA TAUSAGA
There’s coming to a championship and raising your game, then there’s coming to a championship and raising the roof. [A personal best by] Four metres, we’re not talking 40cm, that is ‘mahoosive’ what she’s done there.
2120 – THOMAS’ TAKE – ON HUDSON-SMITH’S GOLD CHANCES
I don’t think he even has to be fully back to win, I honestly don’t. He put Kerani James in his back pocket. Van Niekerk scraped through as a fastest loser, he’s not looking himself yet. Steven Gardiner his training partner, the Olympic champion, he’s out. It’s Matt’s to lose. I’m calling it, It’s Matt’s to lose. If he does recover in time I think he could be the first European to run 43 seconds. I think he could go sub-44 in the final, if he recovers in time. I have faith in that young man.
2115 – THOMAS’ TAKE – ON HUDSON-SMITH’S RECORD
I was so impressed with Matt. One criticism I could have is his consistency and he does not attack the first 300m as you need to do at this level, he goes up so well. He relaxes down the back straight but he maintains the speed, he’s running fast but it won’t feel fast to him, he comes into the top bend and he keeps working. The Norwegian on the outside went off fast so he had a good target to chase and actually when he came off the bend I said it was a new British record, it had to be, he was going so fast. Kirani James was in the inside but he wasn’t threatened, he wasn’t tightened up, he wasn’t frightened, he eased up and wallop, a European record. The fastest European since the 1980s. Thomas Schonlebe the Great German. That was a record I was after, I never got it, he’s went and done it.
2113 – THOMAS’ TAKE – ON FEMKE BOL’S 400M HURDLES SENSATIONAL SEMI
She’s at a canter there. To put it in some context, she’s running way faster than Sally Gunnell’s old world record. She makes it look simple. I’m sure she’s got another gear to go in the final. She eases up and its 52.9. Its so easy for her….and it’s so fast.
2111 – WITH THE GREAT TRACK ACHIEVEMENTS, LET’S NOT FORGET A SENSATIONAL DISCUS FINISH
2110 – THOMAS’ TAKE – ON KIPYEGON GOLD
From gun to tape it was a very brave run. To do it from the front to dictate the pace and have the guts to kick when you want and go early…. She went with just over a lap to go. You’re saying to everyone else: ‘Come around me if you want to beat me.’ It’s easier not doing that to sit in the pack and make them do the hard running for you. A phenomenal performance.
2108 – WE WILL END AS ALWAYS WITH THE THOUGHTS OF IWAN THOMAS….
2105 – THE HEARTBREAK OF THE NIGHT
Olympic champion Steven Gardiner looked in fine form in the third 400m semi-final until the muscle pull as he turned into the straight.
2101 – WATCH HUDSON-SMITH MAKE HISTORY
We have seen two greats of the sport show their best once more, but the highlight of the night for us is Matthew Hudson-Smith’s incredible run in the 400m semi-final.
2059 – TAMBERI WINS HIGH JUMP
Both athletes failed to clear 2.38m but by virtue of leaping 2.36m on the first attempt, as opposed to Harrison on his second attempt, the Italian has the Gold.
2057 – BOL ON MAKING 400M HURDLES SEMI LOOK EASY
2054 – EL BAKKALI WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT WORLD GOLD!
Girma tried to get away driving from the front but El Bakkali passed him before the water jump and powered home. Kenya’s Kibiwot recovered from a fall to finish third.
2051 – WITH THREE LAPS TO GO…
Girma has taken the lead with 1000m remaining and El Bakkali following right behind him.
2049 – BARSHIM IS OUT OF HIGH JUMP
He fails to clear 2.36m and the gold is between JuVaughn Harrison and Gianmarco Tamberi who did leap over the bar at this height. Barshim has to settle for bronze.
2046 – THE MEN’S 3000M STEEPLECHASE IS UNDERWAY
Soufiane El Bakkali has not lost in two years and it could be a titanic encounter with world record holder Lamecha Girma.
2038 – GREAT RUN FROM THE 1500M GOAT KIPYEGON
She led all the way and when she wound the pace up from the bell onwards no one could go with her. Now she has five Gold Medals from the last six global games. Welteji held off Hassan for Silver in a sprint finish. Ciara Mageean ran a fine race just behind in fourth in an Irish record time. Muir was ran out of contention on the back straight, with Snowden and Courtney-Bryant further back.
2036 – STILL KIPYEGON IN FRONT AT HALFWAY MARK
Welteji, Mageean and Muir in touch.
2035 – A SLOW FIRST LAP, KIPYEGON IN FRONT
Hassan at the back. Muir wide in touch with leaders.
2033 – KIPYEGON A BIG FAVOURITE, CAN HASSAN REPEAT DOHA SUCCESS AFTER 10,000 FALL?
And don’t forget Laura Muir who will be in the medal hunt. Katie Snowden and Melissa Courtney-Bryant are also in fine form.
2032 – THE 1500M RUNNERS ARE GOING THROUGH THEIR WARM-UPS NOW
2030 – A HOST OF HIGH JUMPERS HAVE SURPASSED 2.33M
Now the quest for medals will begin.
2026 – ALLMAN JUST SHORT WITH HER FINAL THROW
There’s an American win in the discus, just not the one we expected. Allman is second, with Feng third.
2021 – INCREDIBLE THROW FROM AMERICAN TAUSAGA
Laulauga Tausaga screams with delight after reaching 69.49m. We had drama in the men’s discus and this could challenge it. It is four metres further than she has ever thrown!
2019 – GARDINER PULLS HAMSTRING TURNING INTO HOME STRAIGHT!
He looked so comfortable in front but the Olympic champion Steven Gardiner suddenly fell down in agony. USA’s Quincy Hall finished in front with Sean Bailey second. Wayde Van Niekerk qualifies as a fastest loser.
2014 – ALLMAN EXTENDS DISCUS FURTHER
Gold looks certain as she has now thrown 69.23m. She has the three biggest attempts.
2013 – IT IS A NEW EUROPEAN RECORD!
Hudson-Smith has broken the 36-year mark of Thomas Schonlebe of East Germany from the 1987 World Championships.
2010 – NEW BRITISH RECORD FROM HUDSON-SMITH!
Matthew Hudson-Smith has run a British record of 44.26 easing up on the line well ahead of James in 44.58. Wow!
2007 – HUDSON-SMITH GOES IN LANE 7 IN SECOND SEMI
He has the fastest qualifier Ingvalden outside of him, with former World and Olympic champion Kireni James in five.
2006 – THE HIGH JUMP BAR RISING TO 2.33M WITH SEVEN IN CONTENTION
2002 – WATSON FINISHES AHEAD OF NORWOOD, VAN NIEKERK THIRD
The South African will have to wait to see if 44.65 is fast enough to get to the final. Antonio Watson led going into the home straight and held on in 44.13 while Vernon Norwood was the fastest finisher passing the former World and Olympic champion.
2000 – HEAT 1 OF MEN’S 400M UPCOMING
It is headed by the world record holder Wayde Van Niekerk.
1955 – ALLMAN EXTENDS LEAD
With 68.79 she now has a lead of almost two metres on defending champion Feng Bin in the discus.
1948 – WATCH MAX BURGIN’S ENTERTAINING TAKE OF 800M HEAT
1945 – LITTLE PRODUCES BEST RUN OF SEASON
The quickest semi-final at 52.81 from Shamier Little, albeit ran a lot harder than Bol did. The four from this race make the final meaning former champion Dalilah Muhammad misses out.
1939 – BARSHIM JUMPS 2.25 AT THE SECOND ATTEMPT
An early mishap but this shouldn’t have any bearing on the finishing places.
1937 – BOL DOMINATES SECOND HEAT
Almost slowing to walking pace on the line Femke Bol wins in 52.91. Andrenette Knight is second in 53.72 with Dalilah Muhammad likely to qualify as a fastest loser 54.19. This confirms Jessie Knight will not be in the final.
1931 – ALLMAN TAKES LEAD IN WOMEN’S DISCUS
The Olympic champion is the favourite and takes an early advantage with 68.57.
1928 – CLAYTON WINS IMPRESSIVELY, COCKRELL SECOND
Knight was passed early by Cockrell but recovered to finish just behind Viivi Lehikkoinen in third with 54.51. At the moment she is a fastest loser, but it is hard to see here retaining this. Clayton looked very impressive finishing in a personal best of 53.30 ahead of Anna Cockrell in 53.63, also recording a pb.
1924 – JESSIE KNIGHT GOES IN THE FIRST OF THREE SEMIS
She produced a great performance in the heats, can she repeat?
1917 – NEXT ON THE TRACK IS THE WOMEN’S 400M HURDLES SEMI-FINALS
1914 – HEAR 2019 CHAMPION NIA ALI’S TALK THROUGH FIRST HEAT
1911 – AROP TAKES CONTROL 200M FROM HOME IN FINAL HEAT
Canadian Marco Arop wins and even low-five’s Italian Simone Barontini in second place with France’s Yanis Meziane third.
1903 – EL GUESSE IMPRESSES IN FIRST PLACE
After a slow first 400m he powered home to win in 1:45.24 ahead of Andreas Kremer and the fancied Slimane Moula.
1857 – THE HIGH JUMPERS BEING INTRODUCED TO THE CROWD
They will get underway shortly.
1854 – GOOD PERFORMANCE FROM PATTISON, CHAMPION KORIR HAS TO WAIT
He was way down the field but pulled out wide to finish strongly to end up behind Benjamin Robert of France. Korir, who was given an invitation to defend his title, was just behind Spain’s Mohammed Attaoui.
1847 – ROWDEN FIGHTS TO QUALIFY IN THIRD
Team GB’s Daniel Rowden was boxed in on the back straight, then again on the home straight, but managed to finish strong to edge Poland’s Filip Ostrowski. Adrian Ben of Spain and USA’s Bryce Hoppel were the first two.
1843 – ‘LUMP OF ICE COOLING ME DOWN, IT’S NOT ENOUGH’
Max Burgin is still recovering from the heat in which he ran his heat.
1838 – KIPNGETICH WINS IMPRESSIVELY IN HEAT 3 AHEAD OF SEDJATI
At 23, the winner looks like he could come of age in the tournament, leaving the field behind with 200m remaining. Eugene Silver Medallist Djamel Sedjati was boxed for a while but came through to finish second.
1834 – THE PERFORMANCE OF THE NIGHT SO FAR…
It is a very competitive field but if former world record holder Kendra Harrison maintains this form in the 100m Hurdles she will be very hard to beat.
1830 – BURGIN LEADS FROM THE FRONT, FINISHES SECOND
He led for nearly all the race then was edged by Poland’s Mateusz Borkowski, with the most impressive in the heat probably Australia’s Joseph Deng who finished with something to spare.
1828 – BURGIN GOES IN HEAT 2 OF 800M
1823 – WANYONYI WINS HEAT 1
The 19-year-old Kenyan fancied to win by some, edged clear of Frenchman Gabriel Tual and saluting the crowd as if to say remember me.
1820 – WATCH EXCLUSIVE CHAT WITH HIGH JUMP FAVOURITE BARSHIM
This will get underway shortly and the Qatar athlete is very confident of Gold.
1817 – THE MEN’S 800M HEATS COMING UP
1812 – AMUSAN WINS HEAT 5, EDGING TAPPER
Nigeria’s medal hope Tobi Amusan finished is 12.48 ahead of Jamaican Megan Tapper, with Australia’s Michelle Jenneke third.
1805 – CAMACHO-QUINN WINS COMFORTABLY
Usually that would seem a fine performance but after Harrison’s time, 12.50 seems fairly pedestrian. Nadine Visser was second in 12.68.
1758 – HARRISON WINS IN 12.24
That is a statement performance. Bahamas Devynne Charlton ran a great race from Lane 9 with 12.44 to record a national record. Danielle Williams finished third in 12.51. Sember just managed to qualify in fourth with 12.83.
1755 – BRITAIN’S SEMBER IN HEAT 3 ALONGSIDE USA’S HARRISON
1750 – NIA ALI WINS FROM GUN TO TAPE
She finishes in 12.55, a tenth of second ahead of Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska.
1742 – NUGENT AND RUSSELL FINISH TOGETHER IN HEAT 1
Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent pipped American Masai Russell though both record the same time of 12.60 and each look capable of challenging for a medal should one of the top three err. Ireland’s Sarah Lavin qualified in third.
1730 – FIRST UP WE HAVE THE WOMEN’S 100M HURDLES HEATS
Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn is unbeaten this year and looks the runner to beat with former world champion Americans Nia Ali and former record holder Kendra Harrison the most likely challengers. Cindy Sember runs for Team GB hoping to recapture her form of last year which saw her finish fifth in Eugene.
1720 – WATCH 100M QUEEN SHA’CARRI RICHARDSON OPEN UP TO EUROSPORT
Before we get going with today’s events, watch the fantastic interview with Sha’carri Richardson after her incredible 100m Gold Medal performance.
1715 – WELCOME TO DAY 4!
Incredibly, we are approaching the halfway mark of this tournament which has been a joy thus far. Tonight is highlighted by the 1500m where the irrepressible Faith Kipyegon goes for her third world championship, while Team GB’s triple threat Laura Muir, Katie Snowden and Melissa Courtney-Bryant could all challenge for medals. On the Men’s side, the 3000m Steeplechase sees a fascinating contest between Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma and Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco.
