Wyndham Clark and Fowler lead the way at the US Open, Rory McIlroy one shot behind ahead of pulsating final day

Rickie Fowler and Wyndham Clark lead the way 10-under par heading into Sunday’s round of the US Open, with Rory McIlroy only one shot behind.

Fowler is aiming to win his first major and bogeyed his last shot to score 70 and sit alongside Clark at the top of the leaderboard.

Meanwhile, there is now genuine hope that McIlroy can end his nine-year wait for a Major after a score of 69 that moved the Northern Irishman to nine-under.

“[It] sort of felt somewhat stress-free out there, if you can ever call golf at a US Open stress-free. Overall, pretty pleased with how today went, and feel like I’m in a good spot heading into tomorrow.”

It promises to be a pulsating last day at the Los Angeles Country Club, with Scottie Scheffler only three shots further back.

The current world No.1 holed from 196 yards for an eagle at the 17th and birdied on the last to leave the American firmly in contention.

Tom Kim began the day in fine fashion and became only the fourth man in US Open history to score 29 off nine holes, before ending the day at four-under with a score of 66.

Fowler was leading by two shots going into the 18th, but bogeyed the hole, before Clark rolled in his last birdie putt for a one-under 69.

Clark had previously moved into the outright lead, before consecutive bogeys on the 11th and 12th cut his momentum. It did look like Fowler would have the lead going into Sunday’s play with a fantastic 70-foot birdie putt on the 13th. He parred the following four holes ahead of the aforementioned bogey in the 18th.

Harris English is four shots back with a score of 71, while Dustin Johnson and Xander Schauffele are both five-under.

It was a frustrating day for Schauffele, with the Olympic champion needing three shots to escape a fairway bunker and he bogeyed on the first hole. He then dropped shots on the third and fifth.

Redemption looked possible with birdies on the fourth and sixth, but three more bogeys cost the American.

Reigning champion Matt Fitzpatrick moved to one-under with a score of 68, while Padraig Harrington shot a 67 to also move one-under.
