Yashasvi Jaiswal makes century on debut as India tighten grip on first Test against West Indies

India tightened their grip on the first Test with West Indies, as Yashasvi Jaiswal made a century on debut.

At stumps on day two, India were well placed at 312 for 2 – a lead of 162 runs.

India captain Rohit Sharma and Jaiswal were tested early on day two, but survived to lunch unscathed and put on 229 for the first wicket.

Just after reaching a century of his own, Rohit (103) departed – falling to the part-time spin of local boy Alick Athanaze who caught the glove of the opener and wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva reacted well to take the catch.

After spending an age watching Rohit and Jaiswal make batting look easy, Shubman Gill lasted 11 balls as he was prised out by the spin of Jomel Warrican.

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite used nine bowlers, with his firepower diminished as front-line spinner Rahkeem Cornwall spent most of the day off the field with a chest infection.

Jaiswal has demonstrated an ability to bat big, and when he faced his 323rd delivery he took the record as the Indian batsman to face the most balls on debut, passing the record of the great Mohammad Azharuddin in 1984.

The youngster should have been dislodged on 134, but Kemar Roach’s lbw appeal was turned down. Replays showed it was out, but Brathwaite paid the price for some poor decision-making earlier in the day as he had burned his trio of reviews before the evening session.

Jaiswal made it through to stumps unbeaten on 143, with the 21-year-old putting on an unbroken 72-run partnership with Virat Kohli (36).

The partnership extended India’s lead to 162 runs and a position of strength with the pitch at Rosseau showing signs of wear.
