Young Ohio student killed in bus crash on first day of school
An Ohio elementary school student was killed and nearly two dozen others injured Tuesday when their bus crashed and rolled over on their first day of school, officials said.
The bus carrying 52 students crashed at 8:16 a.m. when a Honda minivan coming the other direction on State Route 41 crossed the center line in Lawrenceville, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Tyler Ross.
Images from the crash scene show the yellow school bus toppled onto its left side in the grass on the side of the highway with the gray Honda nearby.
One student was ejected from the bus and was pronounced dead at the scene, Ross said, without giving any identifying details.
A second student was hospitalized in serious condition, while 22 others were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Dayton Children’s Hospital, the official continued.
Thirteen were transported to the hospital via ambulance, while 10 were well enough to travel with their parents.
Uninjured students were to be reunited with their families at the German Township Firehouse in Springfield, the Northwestern Local Schools district wrote in a Facebook update shortly before 9.
The driver of the bus and the Honda driver also have non-life-threatening injuries and were transferred to Springfield Regional Medical Center, Ross added.
There were no seat belts for passengers on the school bus, but the driver was wearing one, he explained.
“It’s a tragic incident, and we ask for space and patience and time as our community members, emergency personnel on scene, the families affected … start the healing process,” Ross told reporters.
The incident is under investigation, he concluded.
