Puppy rescued after spending eight hours inside of sewer

A scared and soggy puppy was rescued after being trapped in a San Antonio sewer line for more than eight hours this week.

The puppy was one of three that plummeted into an open clean-out valve while playing in the front yard of a home on the city’s South Side on Wednesday, KSAT reported.

Two of the pups were quickly pulled to safety by responders from the San Antonio Fire Department, but they were unable to reach the third one, who crawled deeper into the sewer line. 

The department called the San Antonio Water System [SAWS] for help, sparking the lengthy rescue mission.

SAWS officials located the pup inside the sewer with a small camera, which they used to slowly nudge her 200 feet back to a sewer opening down the street.

After roughly eight hours, the pooch, which responders have nicknamed Pipa, was finally pulled out.

San Antonio Animal Care Services took Pipa to a local vet for a checkup before she was returned to her owners.

Incidents of dogs falling into private sewer lines are rare, SAWS officials told KSAT, but urged residents to make sure their clean out valves are properly covered.
